In a recent statement, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his thoughts on the $29 million in aid sent to Bangladesh.
During an event with U.S. governors on February 21, 2025, Trump explained that the money went to an unknown organization aiming to strengthen the political environment in Bangladesh.
He said, "A $29 million grant has been given to an organization to boost the political environment in Bangladesh, a group that no one has ever heard of."
This comment comes after the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) announced earlier in February that U.S. aid through USAID to Bangladesh had been canceled.
However, the agency did not disclose which organization or individuals received the funding.
Trump, not holding back his criticism, continued, "The $29 million was allocated to reinforce the political environment in Bangladesh. But no one has any idea what this political environment is. What exactly does it mean?"
He further added, "They received checks. Can you imagine? You have a small organization, you get $10,000 here, $10,000 there. And we, the U.S. government, have given them $29 million for Bangladesh. The organization has only two employees. I believe they must be very wealthy. In a few days, they’ll probably be featured in a major magazine, becoming famous."
This came just after Trump had also commented on the U.S. spending $21 million in India to increase voter turnout during the elections, which has created a stir in India`s political scene.
The remarks come shortly after DOGE, led by Elon Musk, announced last week that it had suspended the activities of the U.S. foreign aid agency USAID and canceled funding for various international programs, including some in India.
Trump`s comments about the Bangladesh aid and the funding in India have sparked discussions about U.S. foreign aid and its effectiveness.
